What an affiliate link actually is

An affiliate link is a normal link with a tracking code attached. If you click one and then sign up for or subscribe to that product, the vendor can see that you arrived from us and may pay us a commission for the referral.

It never costs you more. You pay the vendor’s standard price. There is no Fizoral surcharge, and using our link does not remove you from any promotion you would otherwise have qualified for. In some cases an affiliate route carries a better introductory offer than the vendor’s own homepage; where that is true we say so on the page, and where it is not, we do not imply it.

Which of our links earn us money

This matters, so we want to be precise rather than vague. Our commercial position is not the same with every vendor we write about, and it changes over time as programmes are applied for, granted, declined or withdrawn.

• Where we are a member of a vendor’s affiliate programme, our links to that vendor are affiliate links. We may be paid if you subscribe. Those links carry rel="sponsored nofollow" and appear on pages that display an affiliate disclosure above the link.
• Where we are not a member of a vendor’s programme, our links to that vendor are ordinary links. We earn nothing whatsoever if you click them or buy. We still link, because leaving out a product that might suit you would be a worse failure than earning nothing from it.

We do not maintain a public, live table of which vendors we currently earn from, because it would be out of date the week it changed. What we do instead is more useful: every page that contains an affiliate link says so, at the top, before you can reach the link. If a page carries no disclosure, it carries no affiliate links.

What commission does not buy

The obvious objection to an affiliate-funded comparison site is that it will recommend whatever pays best. It is a fair objection. Here is what we do about it.

• Commission rates play no part in ranking, scoring or recommending. The person deciding what a page concludes is working from the pricing sheet, not from a payout schedule.
• No vendor can buy placement, a table position, a badge or a softer conclusion. There is no rate card, because none of it is for sale.
• No vendor reviews a page before publication and no vendor holds a veto over anything we publish.
• We name the vendors that beat the products we earn from, in the opening screen of the page, not in a footnote.
• We publish products we earn nothing from where they are the right answer — including free tiers and bank-bundled products that pay us precisely £0.

The proof, not the promise

Every affiliate site claims independence. The only way to tell the difference is whether it will publish something that costs it money. Three things currently on this site do exactly that:

How we label affiliate links

We follow UK advertising rules — the CAP Code enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority, and the consumer protection rules enforced by the Competition and Markets Authority — which require commercial relationships to be disclosed clearly, prominently and before the reader engages with the content. In practice, on this site:

• A disclosure appears at the top of every page carrying affiliate links, above the fold, before any affiliate link can be clicked — not hidden behind a “more” toggle and not only in the footer.
• Every affiliate link carries rel="sponsored nofollow", which tells search engines the link is commercial and stops it passing ranking credit. This is also what Google’s own guidance asks publishers to do.
• Buttons and links that lead to a vendor are labelled for what they are — we do not disguise a commercial link as a neutral navigation element or as a download.
• The footer of every page repeats the disclosure, so it is reachable from anywhere on the site.
• We do not use pop-ups, interstitials, countdown timers or fake scarcity to push you toward a click.

What we are not

• We are not a broker, an introducer or a regulated financial adviser. We do not arrange contracts, hold your money, or act for any vendor.
• We are not owned by, endorsed by or partnered with any software vendor. Being in a company’s affiliate programme is not a partnership, an endorsement or an approval — it is a public sign-up form.

Cookies and tracking on affiliate links

When you click an affiliate link, the vendor or their affiliate network usually sets a cookie in your browser so the referral can be attributed to us if you subscribe later. That cookie is set by them, on their terms, not by us. What we collect on our own site, what our own cookies do, and how to control all of it is set out in our privacy policy.
